the swirly-eyed rurouni
Kenshin has, basically, a split personality. In his violet-eyed Rurouni form, he is the epitomy of the perfect guy: he cooks, he cleans, he babysits, he's polite, friendly, nice...what more could you ask for? However, ten years ago, he was the feared swordsman or assassin for the Ishin Shishi, the Hitokiri Battousai, and the cross scar on his cheek serves as a permanent reminder of his past. Thus, when someone threatens the peace, his eyes turn yellow and he abandons all forms of politeness, reverting to the killing machine that he once was. Kenshin was once married to a woman named Tomoe, and her death is what caused him to stop being the Hitokiri. Now, he wanders the countryside, seeking to atone for his sins. Kenshin uses the sword technique Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu, and has sworn never to kill again, a vow he upholds with his reverse-edged sword, the sakaba. |

raccoon girl Kaoru is the strong-willed young master of Kamiya Kasshin Ryu, a sword technique which serves for protection rather than killing. She took over the dojo after the death of her father, but students became scarce when a Battousai impers- onator started killing people in the name of the dojo. This occurrence caused her to meet Kenshin, who became a permanent resident. The Dojo never really recovered and Kaoru now spends most of her time be- moaning the fate that has granted her with so many freeloaders and so few students. |

samurai "brat" Yahiko was born into an old samurai family that went bankrupt during the revolution. Unfortunately, both his parents died and Yahiko was forced to work for yakuza to pay the debts that his father had run up. After Kenshin rescued him and instituted him as Kaoru's student (much to his annoy- ance) he threw himself into his training wanting to become strong. This obsession often causes Yahiko to bite off more than he can chew and generally get in trouble, but he's basically a good kid. Generally speaking, Yahiko is the epitomy of the annoying younger brother, he's lazy, impertinent, and calls Kaoru "hag" all the time. He's a good kid, though, and shouldn't be underestimated. |

roosterhead When he was first introduced, Sano was a gangster who called himself Zanza. He hated the Ishin Shishi for what they had done to the Sekihou Tai, a resistance group that had theoretic- ally impersonated the government, but had actually been recieving orders from it and had been mass- acred after having outlived its usefulness. Sano had idolized the leader, and had taken his last name "Sagara" after his death. After fighting with Kenshin, Sano realiz- ed that all the bitterness that he had been harboring was really rather unhealthy and relaxed a bit, but kept the jacket with the kanji "bad" on the back as a reminder to himself. Sano is unreliable when it comes to paying for anything, has no job to speak of, is incredibly superstitious (he's afraid of trains and insists that cameras steal your soul), bull- headed, occasionally not too observant, and generally annoying. In other words, he's the comic relief. However, he can pull his own in a fight, having super- human stamina. There also appears to be something going on between him and Megumi... though the gods know that neither of them is going to admit it any time soon. |

fox lady We first met Megumi when she was running from a group of men, it turned out that she was being forced against her will to make cheap opium for this evil business guy named Kanryuu and she was trying to escape. She comes from a family of bril- liant doctors, which had been wiped out in a fire some years before. After the difficulties with Kanryuu end, she goes into practice with Dr. Genzai At first she engages in a sort of rivalry with Kaoru for Kenshin's affections (to which he is, of course, oblivious) but eventually she recognizes that he loves Kaoru and not her, and gives up on him. She is often asso- ciated with a fox and is basically Kaoru's opposite. She is refined and elegant, but also quite skilled in all the feminine wiles. She is, moreover, a very good doctor and saves quite a few people (including Kenshin, multiple times) over the course of the series. |
