Makoto Shishio is the Shadow Hitokiri
Battousai. He is a genius and his know-
ledge of political undertakings, warfare,
and strategy are almost unsurpassed. He
is a clever schemer who is patient in
his delivery. His serious demeanor and
tightly controlled emotions strike fear
in the hearts of his enemies and even
some of his followers. He is always wrap-
ped up in bandages because his actual skin
is charred black and his eyes are red. He
often wears a blue kimono around his waist
and legs. When the Ishin Shishi sent Kenshin
to battle with the Shinsen Gumi more and more,
Kenshin gradually became a well-known samurai
and his name spread everywhere. To hang on
to the usefulness of an unknown shadow stalker,
the Ishin Shishi promoted another awesome
fighter to Kenshin's old position, Shishio
Makoto. He became the unknown Hitokiri and
carried on after Kenshin had quit fighting.
However, Shishio was much more dangerous
than Kenshin. Where Kenshin never asked about
war details, Shishio used his knowledge clever-
ly and began to manipulate the situation to his
own advantage. The Ishin Shishi eventually
decided that he was much too dangerous to leave
alive and so they ordered he be assasinated.
They had him shot, then set on fire, but, he
survived and somehow strangely transformed.
His skin was blackened, his body altered, and
his purpose changed. He wrapped himself from
head to toe in protective bandages and vowed
to destroy the government.
